The Kids on the Block in the Classroom

The Kids on the Block of Child and Family Tennessee has always focused on our puppet shows as education presented in an entertaining way. With the push to meet state standards, we think it necessary to help teachers and administrators understand how KOTB of CFT fits into the Tennessee State Curriculum. Below is a chart which details just a few of the state (and National) standards that all of our performances meet or exceed. Remember: Each puppet show is different and may meet other state standards. Check with your school district to verify other ways that KOTB of CFT can help your students succeed.

Social Studies

  • Identify differences among people
  • Describe how individuals meet their needs and wants through different means
  • Explain the consequences of an individuals actions and decisions
  • Understand that cooperation is necessary when working within large and small groups to complete tasks

Language Arts

  • Use complete and coherent sentences when speaking
  • Use logical words & appropriate word order to respond to questions
  • Participate in discussions
  • Create mental pictures of a story
  • Expand oral language through experience
  • Speak clearly, properly, and politely
  • Use rules for conversation (e.g., raise hand, take turns, and focus attention on speaker)
  • Participate in discussion
  • Participate in creative responses to text
  • Ask and respond to questions from teacher and other group members
  • Retell familiar stories
  • Retell what has been learned
  • Use appropriate listening skills (e.g., do not interrupt, face speaker, and ask questions)

National Standards

  • Students will be able to demonstrate audience etiquette during theatre performances & describe emotions evoked by a performances
  • Students will be able to identify individual elements (who, what & where) of dramatizations & scenarios
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to construct questions about a topic
  • Students will recognize details, setting, characters, and cause/effect in material from non-print sources & connect his/her prior knowledge between non-print sources
